What are the key pallet dimensions?
Footprint does not determine height: four EPAL designs sharing a 1,200 × 1,000 mm footprint have nominal heights of 138, 144, 156 and 162 mm—a 24 mm difference between models. Standard U.S. pallet dimensions are 48 × 40 inches; an EPAL Euro pallet has a 1,200 × 800 mm footprint. [1, 6–8, 11, 16]

EPAL Euro dimensions

Half-pallet height difference
EPAL 6 and EPAL 7 both have an 800 × 600 mm footprint, but their nominal heights are 144 and 163 mm—a 19 mm difference. Sources: the two EPAL product specifications; verified September 11, 2026. [9, 10]

What are standard pallet dimensions in inches, millimeters and centimeters?
The U.S. reference footprint is 48 × 40 inches, while the EPAL Euro footprint is 1,200 × 800 mm when shown longer side first. CHEP’s UK B1210A uses 1,200 × 1,000 mm, so “Euro” and “UK” should not be substituted for one another in a dimensional specification. [1, 6, 20]

This chart shows the longer side first and converts the declared reference dimensions. Converted inch values are rounded to two decimal places; they are not necessarily the issuer’s own rounded inch display. The model register below preserves what each issuer actually publishes.
The 42 × 42 and 48 × 48-inch rows establish named examples, not their market share or suitability for a particular industry. Likewise, the country labels identify the referenced products—not a single size used by every pallet in that country.
Which dimensions are published for each pallet model?
The register contains 25 selected product records, with published heights included for 23. Two Litco records retain verified footprints but leave height unfilled because a single overall-height value was not confidently established from the inspected drawings.

The register retains the issuer’s side order. EPAL Euro is therefore shown as 800 × 1,200 mm, even though the conversion chart presents the same rectangle as 1,200 × 800 mm. Nippon Pallet Pool labels its dimensions width × length × height; those labels are preserved in the download. [6, 22, 23]
For iGPS, approximately qualifies the footprint and height—not just the weight elsewhere on its specification sheet. For CHEP and PECO, both published unit representations remain visible even when they do not convert exactly. [3–5, 21]

How much can pallet height differ at the same footprint?
Within the 14 selected EPAL designs, four products share a 1,200 × 1,000 mm rectangle but have four nominal heights, spanning 138–162 mm. This 24 mm span compares different designs; it is not the manufacturing tolerance of any one pallet. [7, 8, 11, 16]

Five of these six footprints have multiple nominal heights. That is a property of this defined comparison, not an estimate of how frequently any model is used.
The distinction also appears outside the EPAL subset. The two selected Nippon Pallet Pool Type 11 entries share a 1,100 × 1,100 mm outline but have listed heights of 144 and 150 mm. That comparison identifies two specific designs; it does not establish a general height difference between wood and plastic pallets. [22, 23]
What this comparison establishes
A footprint is insufficient to identify a model’s nominal height. A dimensional reference should therefore carry the product name alongside the numbers.
The table does not rank the designs, identify the most widely used one, or establish that products sharing a rectangle can replace one another. The one-model CP5 group also does not prove that every possible 1,140 × 760 mm design is 138 mm high.

How was this pallet-dimensions dataset assembled?
We compiled 25 named product records from EPAL, CHEP, PECO, iGPS, Nippon Pallet Pool, Litco and ORBIS on September 11, 2026. The original work is the joined register, explicit unit handling and reproducible comparisons; the underlying specifications remain the issuers’ published data.
Selection and verification
This is a purposeful reference set, not a representative market sample. It contains 14 EPAL designs, three CHEP products, two iGPS generations, one PECO design, two Nippon Pallet Pool entries, two Litco footprint records and one ORBIS product.
The EPAL subset is explicitly Euro, 2, 3, 6, 7 and CP1–CP9. Box pallets, QR variants and unlisted construction variants are outside that comparison. The iGPS selection includes Gen 6 and Gen 6.1, not every generation shown on its page.
Each included numerical field was read against its named issuer’s page or drawing. The EPAL Euro and CHEP UK dimensional drawings were visually inspected. The Litco drawings established the two included footprints, but the unresolved overall heights were left empty.
Units, orientation and arithmetic
The downloadable register preserves source-native dimensions before adding calculated fields. It uses NIST’s exact relationship: 1 inch = 25.4 millimeters. 2
For the geometric calculations, the U.S. inch-format records use their published inch values; the EPAL, CHEP UK, CHEP Australian and Nippon Pallet Pool records use millimeters. This is a declared calculation choice, not a claim that one display is the manufacturer’s controlling engineering specification.
The grouping sorts the two footprint sides from longer to shorter. Under that rule and calculation basis, the 25 records form 12 distinct rectangles. Sorting does not change the issuer’s length/width labels or establish structural interchangeability.
The calculations are:
- Millimeters = inches × 25.4.
- Rectangle area in square meters = side 1 in millimeters × side 2 in millimeters ÷ 1,000,000.
- Percentage change from rectangle B to rectangle A = (area A − area B) ÷ area B × 100.
- Within-footprint nominal-height span = greatest included height − smallest included height.
Calculation inputs retain their published precision. Additional decimal places describe arithmetic, not a more precise physical measurement. Differing published height representations are not collapsed into one supposedly authoritative converted height.
Source dates are not verification dates
The CHEP UK sheet has a printed document version of 2–11/2016. The Litco drawings show 4/5/2022, and the EPAL Euro drawing is marked PB 05/2025 EN. Those document dates remain separate from our September 11, 2026 verification date. [20, 24, 25, 27]
An undated product page is recorded as undated. The 2026 edition of this reference does not imply that every source was issued in 2026 or that a new universal pallet standard took effect that year.
Reproduction and updates
The accompanying source-records file and reproduction script regenerate the comparison files and check the record counts, grouping, conversions and drawing-limit arithmetic. Reproducing those calculations does not reverify a live product specification.
A subsequent edition should retain its source-level check dates and document revisions. Changes to inputs require recalculation; a changed calendar date alone is not a substantive update.
Why do some inch and millimeter specifications disagree?
CHEP’s North America page publishes a height of both 5.6 inches and 141 mm, but multiplying 5.6 by 25.4 produces 142.24 mm. This reference preserves both published values; the inspected specification does not establish why they differ. [2, 3]

The last column is an arithmetic comparison between representations. It is not a measured dimensional error, a defect, or an allowed tolerance. These differences should not be averaged away, and their causes should not all be described as rounding without supporting evidence.
Is 48 × 40 inches the same as 1,200 × 1,000 mm?
No. Exact conversion gives 1,219.2 × 1,016 mm for 48 × 40 inches. Compared with a 1,200 × 1,000 mm rectangle, the corresponding sides are 19.2 mm and 16 mm longer. [1, 2, 7]
That answers the dimensional question. It does not answer whether a particular rack, conveyor, vehicle or receiving operation accepts both formats.

How much area does a pallet footprint cover?
A 48 × 40-inch rectangle covers 1.2387072 m², while a 1,200 × 800 mm Euro rectangle covers 0.96 m². The first is 29.032% larger when the second is the comparison denominator; this describes geometry, not usable cargo space. [1, 2, 6]

Half of which pallet?
The 800 × 600 mm EPAL half-pallet rectangle is half the area of 1,200 × 800 mm. The 24 × 40-inch rectangle is half the area of 48 × 40 inches. Those two smaller rectangles are not the same dimensions. [1, 6, 9, 25]
Rectangle area is not deck area
These calculations multiply the outside footprint dimensions. They do not subtract gaps, measure the material touching a load, or determine how many loaded pallets fit a particular space.
The unit distinction matters too: 48 × 40 equals 1,920 square inches. Dividing by 144 square inches per square foot gives 13⅓ square feet, not 1,920 square feet.

What dimensional tolerances do the source drawings show?
The inspected EPAL Euro drawing specifies a nominal 144 mm height with drawing limits of 144–151 mm. The CHEP UK B1210A sheet instead lists a nominal 162 mm height and minimum/maximum values of 156–172 mm; each applies to its own document and product. [20, 27]
A tolerance is the dimensional variation specified around a design value. It is different from the cross-model height span in the earlier audit.

These six entries do not establish tolerances for other EPAL products, unrelated “Euro” pallets, or every wooden or plastic pallet. A matching nominal footprint is not evidence that two products have identical permitted dimensional limits.
A drawing limit is not a fit guarantee. The comparison supplies dimensions, not an assessment of a pallet in a particular receiving system.

What do Ohio and Toledo sources establish about pallet dimensions?
A 2017 Ohio Department of Administrative Services procurement document accepted manufacturers’ standard 40 × 48-inch partial four-way shipping pallets. That is a historical, contract-specific statement—not evidence of a current statewide rule or a separate Toledo pallet-size standard. 28

The inspected local coverage page supplies no numeric pallet dimensions. No Lucas County size distribution or county-specific dimensional requirement was established by this research. The national and named-product tables should not be relabeled as local measurements.
What can’t this dimensions reference tell you?
The register includes published heights for 23 of its 25 records, not a universal height for every footprint. It also contains no physical measurements, representative market-share estimates or independently tested load ratings.
The two Litco height omissions are deliberate. The 42 × 42 sheet labels the end-view vertical dimension 4.25 inches and the side-view vertical dimension 5.60 inches, without reconciling them into one overall-height specification. The 24 × 40 overall-height annotation was not confidently transcribed. Their footprint dimensions were verified, but no single overall height was selected for either record. A missing value is preferable to attaching another product’s height. [24, 25]
Published model dimensions do not establish the dimensions of a damaged, repaired or otherwise changed individual pallet. This reference also does not determine loaded-shipment height, receiving acceptance, rack suitability, conveyor clearance or vehicle capacity. Those decisions require the applicable product and system specifications.
No percentage in this article describes the U.S., Ohio or Lucas County pallet population. The percentages are defined geometric comparisons; the five-of-six result is a count within the enumerated EPAL subset.
Finally, this is not a reproduction of the normative tables in ISO 6780 and does not certify compliance with that standard. No claim of a complete verified ISO size list is made.
What else should you know about pallet dimensions?
A complete dimensional reference needs the named model as well as the footprint. The selected 48 × 40-inch products alone include published inch heights of 5.56, 5.6 and approximately 5.62, so a generic height would erase documented differences. [3–5]
How tall is a 48 × 40 pallet?
The answer depends on the model. PECO lists 5.56 inches for its specified block pallet; CHEP’s North American page lists 5.6 inches alongside 141 mm; iGPS lists approximately 5.62 inches for both selected generations. These are published values, not a single accepted height range for all 48 × 40 pallets. [3–5]
Are 40 × 48 and 48 × 40 the same size?
They describe the same unordered rectangle when both measurements use inches. But reversing the numbers can discard a specification’s intended length/width orientation. For example, EPAL 2 and EPAL 3 list their equal footprint sides in opposite orders and also have different heights. Preserve the model name and the issuer’s dimension labels. [7, 8]
Are Euro and UK pallet dimensions interchangeable?
Not as dimension labels. The EPAL Euro reference is 1,200 × 800 mm when shown longer side first; CHEP UK B1210A is 1,200 × 1,000 mm. One corresponding side differs by 200 mm. Whether either product is accepted in an operation is a separate question from whether the rectangles match. [1, 6, 20]
Does pallet height include the goods?
The model-height column describes the pallet, not a completed shipment. For example, the EPAL Euro specification’s 144 mm is the pallet’s nominal height. It is not an allowance for cargo and should not be used as the total height of a loaded unit. 6
Why do CP1 and CP6 share a footprint but have different heights?
They are different EPAL designs, not two names for one identical specification. CP1 is listed at 138 mm high and CP6 at 156 mm, an 18 mm difference despite their equal 1,200 × 1,000 mm rectangle. The footprint alone does not capture the complete design. [11, 16]
Does a matching footprint establish rack or equipment compatibility?
No. This dataset compares outside dimensions; it does not test a pallet in a particular system. For example, iGPS recommends testing a proposed pallet in its intended application before implementing the system. The relevant product specifications and system requirements, rather than this comparison table, govern operational acceptance. 5
